Position Overview & Specifications

Business Analyst Location: Wokingham, GB, RG41 5BN Division: IT Global Solution Development Job Type: Requisition Number: 44277 Department: ESO Job Function: Business Change and Project Management About us

At National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) we’re aiming to operate a fully decarbonised electricity system for Great Britain by 2035. This means using wind, solar and hydropower - without relying on any carbon-based generators to balance the grid.

We’ll be the first globally to make this amazing full transformation and we’re exceedingly proud and driven to make it happen. Come and join our exceptionally talented team at such an exciting time, in revolutionising our energy system for generations to come!

OFGEM and The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) have announced the creation of a Future System Operator for GB. We will be at the heart of it, building on the skills of our team and our world-leading track record, with enhanced skills and responsibilities.

About The Role

Team Expansion

The world of energy is changing dramatically, with increasing awareness of the impacts of climate change not just in Great Britain, but across the world. We play an instrumental part in transforming the energy system so that it can meet the government’s net zero targets; a fully decarbonised electricity system by 2035, followed by being a net-zero nation by 2050. We are constantly working to operate a greener, future energy system in partnership with the whole energy industry.

Many of our transformational activities impact the way, and the systems we use to, operate the electricity network and balance the nation’s energy demands. We are recruiting for new team members as part of our Business Analysis teams across the ESO who will be instrumental in ensuring that the transformational activities deliver the intended outcomes. These are for both Business Analyst and Senior Business Analyst roles.

If you are excited about:

  • driving change and are comfortable shaping and delivering fast-paced projects
  • solving complex business and energy industry problems
  • doing genuinely interesting analysis
  • collaboration and believe that good communication and inquisitiveness drive lasting results
  • making a difference and having an impact on Great Britain’s journey to net-zero

then please consider applying to join our Business Analysis team, we would love to hear from you!

Industry experience isn’t required.

The role can be based out of Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from the office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Currently the team is operating on a typical pattern of 1-2 days per week in the office, depending on business and personal need.

Your Accountabilities

As a Business Analyst you will operate in one of our core business areas and, depending on project size, may be working individually or as part of a team. In either way there is support from a wider BA community. You will work closely with leaders and subject matter experts, undertaking the following activities:

  • Work with technical experts and key stakeholders across the organisation to elicit and prioritise requirements / user stories aligned to defined business outcomes (methodology will be project dependent)
  • Define and capture benefits through cost benefit analysis
  • Manage interactions with a broad range of stakeholders. Support the identification and prioritisation of new stakeholders to engage
  • Design, support and run workshops and other group working sessions as part of requirements elicitation
  • Produce clear, concise and quality requirements documentation
  • Produce documentation and development of as-is and to-be processes
  • Review design and test documentation to ensure alignment to requirements / user stories
  • Provide analytical support to projects throughout delivery, including reviewing any change or defect requests
  • Support the development of business cases, options analyses and procurement events
  • Coach and support more junior Business Analysts (Senior BA role only).
About You

Excellent interpersonal, stakeholder, facilitation and communication skills

  • Experience working with a wide range of internal stakeholders
  • Skilled in stakeholder management and communication techniques
  • Confidence presenting and creating precise written and presentation material that clearly ‘tells the story’ to the audience
  • Ability to create clear, concise, well written documentation
  • Strong facilitation skills able to run engaging, well-planned workshops

Excellent analysis capability

  • At least 2 years Business Analysis experience (5 years for Senior BA roles)
  • Experience working as the sole BA on a project (with guidance (without guidance for Senior BA roles) and mentoring)
  • Curious mindset, being able to “see the bigger picture”, and connect activities across a complex, interrelated domain
  • Experience and knowledge of business analysis techniques
  • Ability to investigate, understand, analyse, and define “problems” and select the correct approach to make progress to resolve
  • Ability to analyse and model inter-related quantitative and qualitative information into benefits, summary communications, requirements/user stories, options, and recommendations
